Writers Workshop Announces Prize-winning Prose & Poetry Submission in Honor of Late Sesan Ajayi
The Writers Workshop has announced a prose and poetry submission contest in memory of the late Sesan Ajayi. This year’s theme, “The Empty Nest: Nostalgic Contemplation,” invites undergraduates from higher institutions across Nigeria to reflect on themes of loss, memory, and the passage of time.
Participants in the poetry category are required to submit three poems, while the prose category allows for submissions up to 6,000 words. The Fireflies prizes offer a generous reward, with the winner in each category receiving 100,000 Naira. The first runner-up will be awarded 50,000 Naira, and the third-place finisher will receive 30,000 Naira.
All entries must adhere to the following guidelines:
- Submissions must be original and unpublished. If previously posted online, the work should not have been available for more than 12 months.
- Entries must be double-spaced and typed on A4 pages using Times New Roman font.
- A personal bio data page should accompany each submission.
- Proof of undergraduate status must be provided.
The deadline for submissions is May 17. Entries should be sent to writersworkshopnew@gmail.com.
This initiative not only honors the legacy of Sesan Ajayi but also provides a platform for young Nigerian writers to showcase their talent and gain recognition.

Al-Hikmah Markaz Graduates 14 Students at Second Graduation Ceremony in Ibarapa
The management of Al-Hikmah Arabic and Islamic School, Ayete, on Sunday, 21st August, 2022, at its second graduation ceremony, graduated fourteen (14) of its students and conferred on them, various awards of Arabic and Islamic Excellence, for the outstanding performances in their final and qualifying examinations in the school.
At the event, the Chairman of the Day and the Director of Environment, Saki West Local Government of Oyo State, Alhaji Soliu Fákáyòdé (Abu Sooliha), admonished parents to allow their children operate on the guidelines of right worship, as dictated by the Qur’an, and the Sunnah of Muhammad (SAW). He said that the children were the lights that shine tomorrow, and as such, their quality islamic upbringing should at no cost, be influenced.
The Guest Lecturer, Sheikh Al-Ustadh Habeeb Ameen Olawale, while delivering his lectures on the importance of seeking knowledge, emphasized the need to make important, the seeking of untampered islamic knowledge as revealed to Muhammad (SAW). He further said, “the only key to Jannah is by abiding to the teachings of Qur’an and Sunnah.”
The Mudeer, Ustadh Muh. ‘Jaamii’ AbdulGaniyy-Oladele, while giving his votes of thanks, charged parents to be soft-hearted towards their wards. He made parents realize the importance of quality and uncompromised upbringing of every child, outside prostration, which is even not a mark of respect and character. He further encouraged the graduands to further their islamic education, reiterating that the Haflah stage they just passed, was not the end.
“My own siblings are here at this programme. I don’t greet them by prostrating or bending or kneeling, and despite that, I constantly give first-class respect and gestures to them all. They are all here, they can bear witness”, the Mudeer, Ustadh Muh. ‘Jaamii’ AbdulGaniyy-Oladele, said.
Part of the programme also included the recitation of Qur’an offhand by the students, including those who earlier graduated in 2021 at the first graduation ceremony of the school. Students from each class equally participated in the activities for their class.
The Al-Hikmah school conducted its first graduation in September 2021, with a total of ten (10) graduands. The school became fully and formally operational in 2017 following its establishment by the management headed by Ustadh Muh. ‘Jaamii’ AbdulGaniyy-Oladele, who is equally the Imam, Ahlu-s-Sunnah wal-Jama’ah and Head, Al-Ganiyy Model School, both also in Ayete, Ibarapa North area of Oyo State.
The school offers various courses including Ta’afidhul-Qur’an (Qur’an memorization), Tawheed, Aqeedah, and Fiqh, amongst others, for the students. The school has two Mosques, two blocks of four classrooms, a tuck shop, all with water system including toilets and toiletries.
Among various programmes that also aid in student training include, the observance of Solatul-Jumu’ah at the mosques, Da’watul Qoriyah (Preaching at villages), and Coordination of Iftar (for those in need), I’tikaaf and Tafseerul-Qur’an, all during Ramadan. Al-Hikmah school operates on the principles of good ambassadorship of Islam as well as uncompromising interpersonal relationships.

Redemption Forum Reaches Out to Pupils in Ayete, Distributes Exercise Books
An Ayete-based socio-political group, Redemption Forum (RF), had donated 500 exercise books to pupils in all the public and private primary schools in Ayete area of Ibarapa North Local Government, Oyo State.
Representatives of the RF led by Mr. Sefiu Ojebisi, the President of the organization, took the notebooks to the schools on Wednesday, July 27, 2022.
They also spent quality time with the beneficiaries, giving them orientation and inspiring them to prioritize their academic pursuits.
The RF President told this News Agency after the donation that the gesture was their little way of contributing to the education of the younger ones in the community.
Ojebisi said the group was committed to touching lives through education and will continue to support educational development in the area.
“We have distributed notebooks to all public and private primary schools in Ayete community. This initiative was borne out of our quest to making our community a haven for intellectuals.
“The development of any society depends on good education. We all have a significant role to play -the government, organization, well-to-do Individuals, parents and the community. We must ride together to face the challenge.” Mr. Sefiu said.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, all of the school headteachers thanked the donor and appealed to other organizations and well-to-do individuals in the area to emulate the good gesture.
Mrs F.O. Adewale, the Headmistress of Ansarudeen Primary School, Ayete, urged the members of the group to never relent as they have set a pace for others to emulate.
She said: “In my years of service, this is the first time I will see students coming together to help the younger ones from their personal take and not bursary, I encourage you all to continue with this great feat, and endeavor to come up with something greater next year.”
Mr. Tajudeen Alawode, the Headmaster of C&S Primary School, Ayete, in his speech emboldened them to continue being good ambassadors and ensure that the crisis rocking the Federation of Ayete Students’ Union (FASU) comes to an end. “All hands must be on deck to seeing to the growth of students’ affair.”
RF is an Ayete-based organization of erudite and well-groomed individuals in the Ayete community which aims at touching lives through education and social life.
The group had held a number of educational initiatives in the community, ranging from 50 free UTME forms, Inter-tertiary and secondary schools debate, Symposiums, a host of others.

Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic Eruwa Appoints New Management
The Governing Council of Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic Eruwa has on Friday appointed new management to hold sway of the institution’s affairs following the expiration of the former regime led by Mr. Peter Adejumo.
A statement obtained from the Governing Council of the institution indicated that Dr. Akinteye O. Adewuyin, Oladipo S. Abimbola and Abeegunde O. Olatunde as the Acting Rector, Bursar and Head of Works respectively.
Idere Update gathered that the Governing Council, on Friday, announced the dissolution of the erstwhile management and appointment of new people to be responsible for the control of the institution.
Communique issued at a debriefing session of the Governing Council’s decision quoted its chairman, Professor Samuel Ogundiran saying “the appointment is in accordance with the conditions of service for Nigeria Polytechnics as contained in National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Chapter Ten Cap (e) that interim management shall be for a period of six months in the first instance and could be reviewed for another final period of six months.
“I am delighted to inform you that the Governing Council of Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic, Eruwa at its meeting held yesterday 10th September 2021 appointed Acting Rector, Bursar and Head of Works for institution.”
Ogundiran who confirmed that Mr. Peter Adejumo’s regime ended on 10th September 2021 noted that the appointment of the new Acting Rector, Bursar and Head of Works took effect with immediacy.
A source close to the Governing Council of Adeseun Ogundoyin Polytechnic Eruwa hinted Idere Update that the new Acting Rector, Dr. Akinteye Adewuyin who is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of General Studies is an indigene of Igboora, Ibarapa Central Local Government Oyo State and he was the Acting Deputy Rector in the immediate former interim management.
While congratulating the institution on the appointment of the new management, Ogundiran implored the appointees to work harmoniously with the Governing Council for the growth and development of the institution.
