Hopecrest Students to Miss 2023 NECO as School Teacher Absconds with N3M Exam Fee, Others

Published

on

The hopes of no fewer than thirty SS2 and SS3 students of Hopecrest Academy, Igboora, have been dashed as the school failed to register the students for the ongoing National Examination Council (NECO).

The examination, which commenced on July 3, 2023, across the country saw the students of Hopecrest Academy, Igboora, who had prepared for the examination roaming the school premises without any NECO officials on site to provide examination materials for biological practicals, which took place yesterday, Monday, July 10, 2023.

According to an insider within the school who spoke with Peoples Conscience on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, one Mr. Dauda Lukman Olakunle, a member of staff in the school, who was supposed to register the students for the 2023 NECO examination, absconded with the registration fee and other school’s funds running to the tune of three million naira (N3 million).

Speaking with Peoples Conscience in the early hours of Tuesday, one of the parents whose son was affected lamented that WAEC, NECO, and school fees were paid directly into the school account and wondered why the school management would entrust such a huge amount of money in the care of someone they didn’t truly know. “How on earth would the school be saying they don’t know his whereabouts?

“Some of the students in SS2 and SS3 sat for UTME this year, and they need this examination to process their admission; will the school jeopardise their academic pursuits just like that?” She asked rhetorically.

Another source among the school’s members of staff who spoke with Peoples Conscience on the condition of anonymity expressed sadness about the situation the school had found itself in.

In her own words with PC, “The NECO fee is not the only amount of money our staff ran away with; he also ran away with students’ school fees, laptops, and other valuable items on the school premises.

We got to know he didn’t register for NECO just yesterday, July 10, 2023; his wife was arrested but released when she didn’t know his whereabouts.

“We have summoned the parents of the affected students for a meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, July 12, 2023, but I really don’t know if it is about the repayment plan; it is a very serious case; he actually ran away with the sum of N3 million,” she said.

One of the students of the school who also spoke with Peoples Conscience said the school management claimed the NECO fee was paid into Mr. Dauda Lukman’s account for registration, after which he ran away without approaching the NECO office at all for registration.

When asked about the number of affected students, the pupil said 30, including some SS2 students.
